    This is a program-specific application for Associate of Applied Science, Surgical Technology. It is separate from the general GCC admission application.

    • New applicant to GCC – you must complete both:
      1. The general admission application
      2. This program-specific application
    • Current GCC students – you must complete this program-specific application to be considered for admission.

    Admission Criteria & Requirements

    Surgical Technology Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for admission:

    1. Be a Current or New GCC Student 
      • New Students: Submit a general GCC admission application and select Surgical Technology as your intended major.
      • Current GCC Students: Submit a change of major form to Surgical Technology Intent. (Must have a minimum 2.0 GPA, maintained from time of application through completion of the program.)
    2. Attend a mandatory informational meeting
    3. Submit official high school transcript or HiSET (GED) with graduation date
    4. Submit official transcripts from previously attended colleges
    5. Place out of ENG 090/094 by completing any college-level English course (with a grade of C- or better) or take the Placement Assessment and receive a score that places you into ENG 101.
    6. Place into HUD 138 (or higher) on the Placement Assessment or take HUD 137 (or equivalent at another institution). 
    Must be 18 years old by Sept. 1, 2026

    Additional criteria considered for admission:

    • Experience in medical field (e.g. certifications or licensure)
    • Current GPA
    • Support courses completed

    Successful completion of this program requires proficiency in the performance of a variety of skills. Technical standards, meant to clarify minimal standards for essential affective and psychomotor functions, require students to

    1. Must be ambulatory
    2. Be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
    3. Be able to perform functions such as standing for prolonged periods of time (4-6 hours) while navigating surgical field environment, often requiring abstinence from nourishment and restroom breaks
    4. Possess fine and gross motor skills, and the ability to perform multiple motor tasks simultaneously
    5. Have visual ability to see 20/20 or better with or without corrective lenses, distinguish shades of color, and have peripheral and depth perception; be able to hear and understand muffled communication without visualization of the communicator's mouth
    6. Have comprehensive understanding of spoken and written English language, including the ability to learn medical terminology
    7. Have emotional maturity to work with others in a variety of settings and situations; be able to maintain hygiene, uniform requirements, and aseptic technique; be able to think critically, apply ethical standards, and maintain utmost integrity
    8. Be able to prioritize responses and interventions in emergency situations
    9. Have emotional stability required to adapt to changing environments and work-related challenges while maintaining composure under stress
