Admission Criteria & Requirements

Associate Degree Nursing Program Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for admission:

Be a Current or New GCC Student
- New students: Submit a general GCC admission application and select Associate Degree Nursing as your intended major.
- Current GCC Students: Submit a change of major form to Pre-Nursing/ADN Intent (NUC). (Must have a minimum 2.0 GPA, maintained from time of application through completion of the program.)
Submit official high school transcript or HiSET (GED) with graduation date.
Submit official transcripts from previously attended colleges.
Complete MAT 120 (or equivalent) within 7 years with a grade of C+.
Complete the English Composition I (or equivalent) with a grade of C or better.
Complete ten credits from the list of GCC courses below, including one of the four-credit BIO* courses listed below:

BIO 215	Anatomy and Physiology I	4 cr.	C+ required within 7 years* **
BIO 216	Anatomy and Physiology II	4 cr.	C+ required within 7 years*
BIO 205	Microbiology	4 cr.	C+ required within 7 years*
ENG 112, 114, or 116	English Comp II	3 cr.	C required
SOC 101	Principles of Sociology	3 cr.	C required
PSY 101	Principles of Psychology	3 cr.	C required
PSY 217	Human Growth & Development	3 cr.	C required within 7 years^
Any Below	Humanities Elective	3 cr	C required.
	AHS, ART, ASL, DAN, ENG, FLK, FRE, GGY, HIS, HUM, LAT, MUS, PHI, PCS, SPA, or THE

Biology I (BIO 126) is a pre-requisite for Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II (BIO 215 and BIO 216), but it is NOT required to apply to the ADN program. Students who feel that they have a strong science background from high school or college may choose to take a challenge exam for Biology I to meet the BIO 215/216 pre-requisite.

* Currency Exams are available for these courses if they were successfully completed more than seven years prior to beginning the program.
** BIO 194/BIO 216 may be used if a grade of B or better is achieved in BIO 194.
^ College Board CLEP test required if past seven years.

Complete the Test for Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) with a composite score of 60% within two years of beginning the program. High school seniors with a B average may waive this requirement for the fall entry after graduation.

Successful completion of this program requires proficiency in the performance of a variety of skills. Technical standards, meant to clarify minimal standards for essential affective and psychomotor functions, require students to:

Be ambulatory
Be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
Possess fine motor coordination required to perform such technical skills as preparation and administration of medications
Have visual acuity to perform technical skills such as physical assessment, preparation of proper dosage of medications
Have auditory perception allowing effective use of stethoscope and communication
Have emotional stability required to exercise sound judgment and intervention activities
Have emotional maturity to develop appropriate therapeutic relationships
